Student Learning through Technology

The purpose of this course blog is to serve as a practice exercise in EDM 510 Microcomputing Systems in Education.

Student Learning through Technology

The progression of technology in the classroom has proven to have a major impact on student learning. The advancements which have been made in technology have opened up an array of options for students to utilize in learning. While technology is a wonderful tool, it can also hinder student learning if it is not implementing correctly. In your opinion and based on past experiences, what are some of the most beneficial technology tools which can be implemented in Reading and Math for both general education and special education students to help support (and not hinder) learning?

  1. Read and Write for Google Chrome is a great resource that I use with my struggling readers. They are able to use the app to highlight text and then the program will read the text to them. This is a great tool for my sped students and enables them to participate in general ed assignments and be successful.

    1. Thank you, Jeana. I have not used Read and Write in my classroom. It definitely sounds like a great resource for students, especially struggling readers. I look forward to implementing this resource with my students. Thank you for the suggestion!

  2. My favorite tool is Quizlet. When I worked in the inclusion setting, this was my best friend. I would give bonus points to whichever student decided to create it for the upcoming test. After it was created, I would divide students into groups and they would quiz each other on their phones to review. This was perfect for my strategies/ transition class, but I also used it when they were with the general education class.

I also love Kahoot. The students would always get so loud and competitive over it. It was fun to see students that excited about learning.

    1. I have some experience with Quizlet but I like that you provided incentives for individuals who created it. I also like the idea of dividing students in groups to review for the quiz. As for Kahoot, I have not personally used it in my classroom but I have fellow teachers who have and it is a big hit with the students. If students are getting excited about learning, that is exactly the type resource that I want to implement in my classroom. Thank you for your suggestions, I look forward to trying these in the near future with my students.

  3. Christina, I use MobyMax in my classroom. It is a great program that encourages students to want to do their assignments. The students can work on anything from phonics and sight words up to algebra all on one site. At the end of each assignment the teacher can put a game on the students' page for them to play as a reward but the game is also still educational. I will also try out the read and write program because it does sound interesting.
